In the United States there are more than 70 million pet cats. The Egyptians probably domesticated, or tamed, wild cats about 3,500 years ago. A female cat gives birth to a litter of kittens about two months after mating. House cats eat mainly canned or dry food made especially for cats.

The leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) was tamed independently in China around 5500 BCE. In 2003, the International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature conserved the name silvestris Erxleben 1777 for the wildcat, but did not suppress catus Linnaeus 1758. A juvenile cat is referred to as a kitten (shortened to kitty in British English), a term interchangeable with the now-obsolete word catling in Early Modern English.

This well known love of string is often depicted in cartoons and photographs, which show kittens or cats playing with balls of yarn. Domestic cats, especially young kittens, are known for their love of string play. He also mentions that their domestic cats look just like the local wild cats (Kruuk 2002). This is evidence that cats have been associating with humans for a long time (Pickrell 2004). Because of an ancient mutation, however, domestic cats are prone to polydactyly, and may have six or seven toes.

It is possible that interbreeding with local wild cats might have also played a part in this. It is said by some writers that Muhammad had a favorite cat, Muezza (Geyer 2004) It is said he loved cats so much that "he would do without his cloak rather than disturb one that was sleeping on it" (Reeves 2003). Judaism considered the cat an unclean animal and cats are cat not mentioned in the Bible. Some historians report that killing a cat was punishable by death and that when a family cat died family members would shave their eyebrows in mourning (Siegal 2002).

The first cats emerged during the Oligocene about 25 million years ago, with the appearance of Proailurus and Pseudaelurus.
